A Legacy of Craft, Community, and Four Generations of Baking
The roots of Bagel Chicks Bakery stretch back nearly a century, beginning in 1932 when Sam Costantino arrived in New York City from Sicily, Italy.
Inspired by the promise of opportunity as he passed the Statue of Liberty, Sam built his American dream from the ground up — starting with flour, water, and a small family bakery in New York.
1932 Sam Constantino arrived in NYC from Sicily, Italy, where he started a small family bakery.
2025 Jackie formally partnered with Kat to rebrand the business as Bagel Chicks Bakery.

1st Generation: Arrival in NYC
The roots of Bagel Chicks Bakery stretch back nearly a century, beginning in 1932 when Sam Costantino arrived in New York City from Sicily, Italy.
2nd Generation: Constance Takes Over
Sam’s daughter Constance Costantino took the reins next, continuing the family’s commitment to honest ingredients and traditional techniques.
3rd Generation: John Takes The Reigns
Constance’s son, John Costantino, grew up learning the business and eventually ran the New York bakery for a decade before relocating with his wife Debra and their daughters Julie and Jackie to Germantown, Maryland.
Royal Bagel Bakery
In 1991, the Costantino family reestablished their business under a new name — Royal Bagel Bakery — at 19725 Germantown Road, Maryland.
Royalicious Was Born
The family relocates to West Virginia in 2010. Royalicious Bagel Bakery opened its doors that same year in Charles Town and quickly became a local favorite. John passed away in 2021, and Debra in 2015, but their youngest daughter Jackie remained committed to the family legacy.
4th Generation: An Unexpected Partner
In 2019, Jackie met someone who would become an unexpected but natural partner — not just in business, but in shared vision and passion. That person was Katheryn Acker.

Continuing the Legacy
His daughter Constance Costantino took the reins next, continuing the family’s commitment to honest ingredients and traditional techniques. As a second-generation baker, Constance upheld her father’s standards while expanding the bakery’s reputation for quality and consistency. Her son, John Costantino, grew up learning the business and eventually ran the New York bakery for a decade before relocating with his wife Debra and their daughters Julie and Jackie to Germantown, Maryland.
In 1991, the Costantino family reestablished their business under a new name — Royal Bagel Bakery — at 19725 Germantown Road. What started as a small family-run shop quickly became a neighborhood favorite, known for its authentic New York-style bagels, scratch-made baked goods, and a sense of familiarity that regulars came to rely on. For 20 years, the bakery grew alongside the Costantino family, shaping the early lives of both daughters and continuing a tradition already decades in the making.
History made daily, one bagel at a time.
By 2010, the family sought a slower pace of life and began looking beyond Maryland. Frequent visits to friends in Jefferson County, West Virginia, opened the door to new possibilities. The decision was made to relocate once again, this time to Charles Town. Royalicious Bagel Bakery opened its doors that same year and quickly became a local favorite. Situated near the town’s Walmart, the shop served a growing and diverse customer base — from longtime locals to new arrivals from Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
As the region evolved, so did the bakery.
John passed away in 2021, and Debra in 2015, but their youngest daughter Jackie remained committed to the family legacy. With over 30 years of hands-on experience and a deep-rooted passion for the craft, she stepped fully into the leadership role, focused on carrying the business forward with integrity and purpose.
But this next chapter wasn’t written alone. In 2019, Jackie met someone who would become an unexpected but natural partner — not just in business, but in shared vision and passion. That person was Katheryn Acker.
What neither of them realized at first was that their story had started years earlier. Back when Jackie was working at the Germantown bakery, a young girl named Kat (Katheryn Acker) often came in with her family. She was just a customer then, but already drawn to the warmth and rhythm of bakery life. Even as a child, she knew it was what she wanted to do.
Though her family eventually moved away and the Germantown shop changed hands, Kat’s dream stayed with her. She went on to study baking and pastry arts, setting her sights on a career in the field. Years later, she walked into Royalicious in Charles Town, spotted a “Now Hiring” sign, and immediately applied. The space felt familiar, and soon after starting, she learned why — Royalicious was run by the same family behind the bakery she had loved as a child.
Bagel Chicks Bakery comes to life.

Jackie and Kat quickly formed a strong connection. What started as a working relationship became a close friendship. In many ways, Jackie became like an older sister, and the two would go on to build the next chapter of the bakery together.
In 2025, Jackie formally partnered with Kat to rebrand the business as Bagel Chicks Bakery — a name that reflects both the generational shift and their shared vision for the future. While the name is new, the foundation remains the same: hand-rolled bagels, family recipes, and a dedication to customer service that spans four generations.
Bagel Chicks Bakery aims to bridge tradition and modernity. Jackie and Kat have infused the shop with updated aesthetics and an approachable atmosphere that speaks to a new generation of customers, while maintaining the time-honored techniques and recipes that built their reputation. It’s a space where legacy meets innovation — where New York-style bagels are made fresh daily and served in a space that reflects the tastes of today’s community.
As Jefferson County continues to grow, Bagel Chicks Bakery has become more than a bakery. It’s a staple of the area’s evolving food scene and a reflection of the county’s growing population. Locals and newcomers alike find common ground over a toasted everything bagel, a cup of house-brewed coffee, or a warm breakfast sandwich made to order.
The bakery has also earned regional and national recognition. Over the past 14+ years in West Virginia, the business has maintained a flawless record with the health department and been consistently ranked among the best in the area. Royalicious — and now Bagel Chicks Bakery — has been featured in a variety of publications and food blogs celebrating its authentic offerings and strong community presence. From Best of Jefferson County accolades to mentions in national food roundups, the recognition speaks to the consistent quality that defines every product that comes out of the kitchen.
Looking ahead, Jackie and Kat remain committed to honoring the past while building for the future. Bagel Chicks Bakery is not just a rebrand — it’s a continuation of a deeply rooted story. With nearly 100 years of family tradition behind them, they’re shaping what the next century of baking looks like in West Virginia.
Whether you’re a longtime customer or walking through the door for the first time, you’re stepping into something special — a place where history is made daily, one bagel at a time.
However, there are a couple of areas that could use some improvement. We ordered a mocha frappe, and unfortunately, it was a letdown. It tasted more like chocolate milk—completely melted and not blended at all. For a specialty drink, it just didn’t hit the mark.
Additionally, the ordering process could use a bit more structure. From bagels to pastries to drinks, it wasn’t clear who was handling what, and with multiple staff members behind the counter, it caused some confusion and delays. A bit more coordination and clear roles could streamline the ordering process to help with a faster checkout.
